Visualization on the Flow of All Causal Conditions

Yutang Lin

Recently I visited a weather website, www.windyty.com, and it offers images of current weather conditions in motion. Furthermore, one can enlarge or reduce the scale so that weather motions on the whole globe can be seen at a glance, and the globe image can also be turned around, using the curser, at will so that one may expand one’s vision to cover the whole world. One can view weather conditions all over the world, at various altitudes, as to various elements such as wind, clouds, waves, rain or snow, temperature and pressure, one at a time. Furthermore, one can trace back to weather conditions in the past, and look at weather forecast on coming days.

It seems to me that we can make use of this convenience to practice ″Visualization on the Flow of All Causal Conditions. ″ At this webpage we can only see the everlasting flow of one kind of causal conditions such as wind, clouds, rain and waves, but in fact all causal conditions are concurrently flowing; not to mention that among causal conditions there are too many levels and elements that are not susceptible to human inquiries and cognition. Facing reality as hinted at through these images, how could we not attain some degree of awakening from the ignorant and deluded attitudes and behaviors that we are used to?

Dharma does not demand blind following in faith, but only reminds us of facts so as to help beings escape from traps of deluded grasping, and then one may lively apply one’s mind and body to promote harmony among the totality of all sentient beings and non-sentient objects. Therefore, reflection through observing these flowing images does not aim at reaching certain views, but simply hope that the practice will help people to become liberated from confinement of deluded grasping that they are unaware of, and then they may enjoy open vision and mentality that encompasses all.

Patriarch Bodhidharma faced a wall for years; on the one hand, he was waiting for sincere disciples who seek for teachings, and on the other hand, he was teaching by setting an example that, only after all delusions ceased can lively application arise. This is a state that can be attained only by devoted practitioners who are well advanced. As to the visualization recommended here, I hope that through reflection over lively images of everlasting flow of a totality people will gradually be led into a life of vast openness.
