「是法住法位,世間相常住。」這是《法華經‧方便品第二》內,重要的開示。

無限法界內的萬象(萬法、一切法)是互為因緣的一整體。由於因緣的不停互動與遷變,萬象也不斷地在或顯或隱。

然而,就整體因緣正在某種遇合之際而言,每一法都是被整體的一切因緣所界定;此即「是法住法位」。從任一法被整體因緣界定之際而言,它們之間的關係是永恆不變的;換句話說,整體因緣的種種遇合在整體法界中是永恆不變的。唯一的遷變是整體法界中萬象的或隱或顯。

因此,「世間相」從「是法住法位」之際來說,是「常住」的,也就是說,永恆不變的。從我們一般對立的眼光看來,世間萬相當然是「成、住、壞、空」的。

若能了悟上述的法理,則豈止「世間相常住」;依理而推論,應是「是法住法位,一切相常住。」

All Phenomena Constantly Abiding

″As this dharma abides in its dharma position, all worldly phenomena are constantly abiding. ″ This is an important teaching given in the second Chapter, Heuristic Devices, of the Lotus Sutra. (By the way, here the word ″dharma″ means a ″thing″.)

The myriad phenomena (myriad dharmas, all things) in the boundless Dharmadhatu are in oneness, and are mutually dependent and interactive in a net of causal relations. Due to the incessant interactions and transitions among their causal relations, the myriad phenomena are also incessantly appearing or disappearing.

Nevertheless, at any particular juncture of the concurrence of all these causal relations, each and every dharma are well set and defined by the totality of all causal relations—this is the meaning of ″as this dharma abides in its dharma position″. When a dharma is thus set and defined by the totality of all causal relations, the net of their inter-relationships is eternal, in the sense that it cannot be otherwise. In other words, all the variegated concurrences of all causal relations in the whole Dharmadhatu are, as such, eternal and cannot be changed. The only changes are the appearances or disappearances of the phenomena.

Therefore, upon the juncture of ″a dharma abiding in its dharma position″, ″all worldly phenomena″ are ″constantly abiding″; in other words, they are eternally unchangeable at that juncture. From our ordinary dualistic point of views, all worldly phenomena are, of course, in the processes of ″arising, abiding, deteriorating, and then vanishing″.

If one could comprehend the Dharma teaching as presented above, then it is not only that ″all worldly phenomena are constantly abiding″ but also permissible, according to the same reasoning and in accordance with the above teaching, for one to state that, ″as this dharma abides in its dharma position, all phenomena are constantly abiding. ″
