Yutang,

the experiences I had when you did Powa service for my ancestors, suggest that Catholics welcome the service.
So did some experiences with the service in Chilean cemeteries as well as US cemeteries.
As for live Catholics among friends and family in Chile, I have found remarkable respect for Buddhism, often so among the most religious of them.
None of them took offense when I've said something like "I will commend your such and such (just deceased) family member for a Buddhist prayer to help him be at peace" (or whatever words were appropriate at that moment).

Inevitably, many Catholics mix up the little they know about Buddhism with their perceptions about Hinduism. When I see this happen, I say "Jesus was born in Judaism, but Christianity is not Judaism". "Yes, VERY different", they reply. And I say "so it is between Buddhism and Hinduism".

The more difficult case are non-believers, I found that non-believers often take offense that someone is (they feel) "forcing superstition on them". In some cases, when offering a Powa service for a deceased atheist relative, some of them feel that you are insulting the memory of their deceased relative. Even though they believe the deceased has ceased to exist, they tend to feel that your compassion for his suffering is patronizing. I have found it is difficult to make a religious connection with atheists.

Best regards,

Juan

The help from Powa is a lift to more purity in the spiritual realm, so it actually has no bearings on worldly distinction of this or that religion.

Furthermore, such help cannot be forced onto someone, so if a deceased being does not want it, it will not affect the being. Hence, no need to worry about forcing it against someone's religious preferences.

In addition, beings' comprehension will change and become more comprehensive after they left the physical sphere; therefore, it is quite possible that after death they would welcome the help from Powa even though in life they did not. So I recommend that all deceased beings be entered onto the list.

This email will be posted as one among the Collection of Inquiries for Teachings, and also listed on the Powa request page.
